Mohala at Ward Village is Discovery Land Company’s first urban residential project in Hawai‘i, bringing the brand’s signature approach to hospitality and community into the heart of Honolulu. Positioned within one of the city’s most vibrant neighbourhoods, the project reimagines the idea of a vertical resort community—combining the energy of urban life with the warmth, ease, and natural beauty that define Discovery’s island destinations.

As part of the work completed at Resonance, the project focused on positioning, identity design, and the development of a visual language that could express the duality at the heart of Mohala: thrillingly urban and authentically Hawaiian. Named after the Hawaiian concept of blossoming and unfolding, Mohala represents a place where residents can grow, gather, and fully immerse themselves in both city and island life.

The identity system was designed to feel organic, tactile, and deeply rooted in place. The logo was hand-crafted in ink to create a sense of warmth and tactility, allowing the identity to feel distinctly organic and deeply connected to place. Inspired by the blooming ‘ilima flower, the icon balances softness with structure, while the top-centre petal subtly mirrors the shape of O‘ahu—a quiet reference to Mohala’s home in Honolulu. The accompanying typography pairs elevated, chiseled serif forms with grounded sans-serif elements, drawing inspiration from Hawaiian carving traditions while maintaining a contemporary sensibility.

 
 

The broader visual system extends this balance throughout the brand, combining rich tropical colour, sculptural typography, textured print finishes, and refined editorial layouts to create a luxurious yet approachable experience. Applied across digital platforms, printed collateral, environmental graphics, and branded residences, the identity positions Mohala as a distinctly urban expression of Discovery Land Company’s world—one where resort living, cultural connection, and contemporary Honolulu life converge.
